When Wedding Costs Are at an All-Time High: How to Decide What Matters Most

If you’re newly engaged, you’ve likely had a version of this moment:

You sit down to start planning. You have a number in mind. You begin gathering estimates. And suddenly… that number feels wildly disconnected from reality.

You are not imagining it. Inflation has collided head-on with the wedding industry. Labor, materials, food costs, shipping, insurance... every layer of what it takes to produce a beautiful event has shifted significantly, no matter where in the world you are.

And here’s the good news: thoughtful spending is not a limitation. It’s an opportunity.

The most meaningful weddings we plan aren’t the ones with the biggest budgets. They’re the ones with clarity. When you know what matters most to you, your investment becomes intentional and that’s where magic happens.

So how do you decide your priorities?

Let’s walk through it.

If This Is a Destination Weekend: Your Venue Is Everything

If guests are traveling, especially flying, your wedding is no longer just a six-hour event. It’s a weekend experience that requires a great deal of commitment from your guests. You should honor this!

In this case, your venue does heavy lifting.

Instead of asking, “Is this pretty?” ask:

  • Is it walkable to restaurants, coffee shops, and nightlife?

  • Are there multiple hotels nearby at different price points?

  • Is there built-in scenery that minimizes the need for heavy décor?

  • Does the location feel immersive?

When guests are making a financial and time investment to celebrate with you, convenience and environment matter deeply. A stunning but isolated venue that requires 30-minute shuttles to everything can unintentionally create friction and ultimately sour a wedding weekend when the guest count comes in much lower than anticipated.

In destination settings, we often recommend allocating more toward:

  • A venue with built-in character

  • Welcome party locations that showcase the area

  • Transportation logistics (so the weekend feels seamless)

When the setting carries the aesthetic and experience, you can scale back in other areas and still have an incredibly impactful celebration.

If Design Is Your Love Language: Invest Where It Shows

Some couples have dreamed about the visual story of their wedding for years. They care deeply about atmosphere — how it feels when you walk into the room, how candlelight hits the table, how the florals transform a space.

If that’s you, honor it, but be strategic.

If you choose a “blank canvas” or industrial venue, understand that design becomes infrastructure. You’ll likely need:

  • Extensive floral installations

  • Custom lighting

  • Draping

  • Rentals to soften or elevate the space

In this scenario, florals and production deserve a meaningful portion of your budget because they are creating the environment from scratch.

On the other hand, if you select a venue with strong architectural presence — historic charm, layered interiors, natural landscape — you may not need as much décor to achieve a beautiful result.

Design-forward weddings aren’t about spending more everywhere. They’re about directing investment toward the visual pillars that will make the strongest impact in photos and in person.

If Guest Experience Is the Priority: Feed Them Well and Keep Them Dancing

If your biggest joy comes from imagining a packed dance floor and guests raving about the food weeks later, your priorities likely sit in hospitality.

In that case, we encourage clients to invest most heavily in:

  • Exceptional catering

  • Elevated bar selections

  • High-quality entertainment (see: live band!!!)

Guests will always remember how they felt at a wedding celebration.

Was dinner delicious? Did the band keep the energy high? Was I hot, cold, hungry or thirsty? Were lines too long?

A thoughtfully curated menu, late-night bites, and a band that reads the room beautifully will create emotional resonance in a way that oversized floral installations sometimes don’t.

If this is your lane, you may scale back on:

  • Over-the-top ceremony structures

  • Excessive signage

  • Elaborate lounge builds

Instead, you pour into what your guests will taste, hear, and feel.

If Intimacy Is the Goal: Consider Reducing Guest Count

Here’s the truth that’s hardest to say: guest count is the most powerful lever in your budget.

When costs per person have risen dramatically, even reducing your list by 20 guests can meaningfully shift your flexibility.

If you’re craving:

  • A more curated experience

  • Higher-end rentals

  • A unique venue

  • A destination setting

Sometimes the answer isn’t stretching the budget — it’s refining the list.

Smaller celebrations often allow couples to elevate every touchpoint in a way that feels deeply intentional.

If Longevity Matters: Think About What Lives Beyond the Day

For some couples, photography and videography feel non-negotiable. And we agree — these are the pieces that remain long after the florals are gone and the cake is eaten.

If preserving the day beautifully is essential to you, protect that investment early in your planning process. The right creative team ensures that every other decision you’ve made is documented with care.

The Exercise We Recommend to Every Couple

Before making any big decisions, sit down together and each answer this question privately:

“If we could only go all-in on three elements, what would they be?”

Then compare.

You may be surprised. One of you might care deeply about food. The other might care most about the setting. This conversation is where clarity begins... and oftentimes where we see a game of House Hunters come to life IRL in wedding planning ;)

From there, build your budget around your top three, not around industry checklists or Pinterest trends.

Thoughtful Spending Is Not a Compromise

We’re in a moment where couples are more discerning than ever. They’re asking better questions. They’re weighing trade-offs. They’re prioritizing intentionally.

And we love that.

When you stop trying to check every box and instead build around your true priorities, your celebration becomes unmistakably yours. The energy shifts. Decisions feel lighter. The day unfolds in a way that feels aligned and deeply celebratory.

And that’s the goal — not perfection, not excess — but a wedding that feels generous, meaningful, and entirely reflective of you.

In a season where costs may be rising, intention is what creates beauty.

And intention, always, is something worth celebrating.
